In the RSN Embroidery Studio, many of our clients have pieces they wish to save, whether inherited from family or personally collected. One such client, an avid textile enthusiast, purchased a small section of a woven Flemish tapestry at auction. This sometimes happens when a tapestry is beyond conservation or, through its history, has been reduced in size to fit a smaller space.
It was decided that this particular tapestry was the perfect size to be repurposed into a cushion, as the section featured just the figure’s head and measured approximately 45 centimetres square. We started by giving the piece a general surface clean with a low-suction conservation hoover, removing any surface dust and debris. Next, the tapestry was supported and secured in any weakened areas. Silk is often used for this purpose rather than wool, which is harder-wearing.
The client wanted to enjoy the tapestry and had, in their collection of textiles, the most amazing vintage silk velvet and decadent fringe, which suited the piece perfectly. The client had always wanted to use the fringe and velvet for a special piece, and this proved to be the perfect one.
To support the textile, the cushion inner was specially made with extra filling to ensure it was full and supported the tapestry sufficiently. This required very careful handling during the cushion’s construction.
We like to talk about our commissions, and this client was very happy for us to do so. They also gave us the freedom to take some carefully curated photographs, making use of our wonderful surroundings at Hampton Court Palace.
