Inspired by the elaborate embroidery found on gentlemen's waistcoats of the Georgian and Regency periods, this contemporary design explores the decorative techniques and craftsmanship of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
Working with fine silks, stranded cottons, ribbons and decorative goldwork materials, you will create an embroidered design inspired by the lower corner of a gentleman's waistcoat. Techniques include silk shading, ribbonwork, trellis stitch, chain stitch, buttonhole stitch and couching, alongside traditional card padding to create raised, sculptural details.
Combining historic techniques with contemporary design, this project offers an opportunity to explore the elegance and intricacy of period embroidery under the expert guidance of a Royal School of Needlework Tutor.
All embroidery materials and equipment required for the retreat are provided.
