Description
What happens when you set out to make cross stitch patterns and
end up becoming Mr X Stitch?

In The Mr X Stitch Guide to Life, Jamie Chalmers shares 13 thoughts on a creative career, drawn from his adventures in contemporary embroidery and the unexpected places they have taken him. Illustrated with remarkable textile art, this candid and entertaining talk explores what it takes to make work, share it with the world and keep going when things get complicated.
Jamie reflects on finding a voice that might surprise you, putting in the practice and actually finishing things. He introduces the “lizard brain” that pipes up whenever you try something brave, considers the value of trying unfamiliar things and makes a case for explaining your work in language your mate in the pub would
understand.
There are practical questions too. How do you value your time and avoid selling yourself short?
When can working for free open doors, and when does it become a habit you cannot afford? How do
you listen to criticism without letting every passing opinion knock
you off course?

Drawing on experiences ranging from publishing and podcasting
to becoming a professional Father Christmas, Jamie considers the realities of sustaining a creative life. Expect honest reflections on social media, the importance of building your own audience and the uncomfortable business of recognising when something you have built has stopped working.

Along the way, he shares work by contemporary textile artists
whose imagination and skill demonstrate just how much is possible with thread. With humour, practical observations and questions to take away, this talk invites you to consider your own creative direction. It also offers a timely reminder of something easily forgotten amid deadlines, money worries and Instagram metrics: you get to make things. That is a privilege worth enjoying.
