Sow Studio: Contemporary Embroidery in Practice
Wednesday (UK)
Online via Zoom
Please read the 'Important Booking Information' below before booking this Talk.
Description
This talk will explore how Sow Studio has evolved from gaining experience within other embroidery studios to establishing an independent practice and building its own client base.
It will cover the early stages of setting up the studio, the experience gained before launching Sow, and how this has helped shape the studio’s approach to embroidery today. The talk will also explore how the studio began building relationships with clients and expanding its work across a range of sectors, including art, interiors, fashion and events.
A key focus will be Sow Studio’s approach to projects from start to finish. The talk will look at how an initial idea develops through design, digitising and sampling, and how this process allows the studio to experiment with materials, stitch types, scale and texture before moving into final production.
A selection of projects will then be explored in more detail, including the Beer Tapestry for Greene King, which involved over two million stitches and approximately 150 hours of work.
The talk will also feature other bespoke projects, including work created for Studio Ashby and Christian Bense. These commissions began with Sow Studio’s own designs and samples, demonstrating how experimentation and development within the studio can evolve into finished projects.
Overall, the talk will offer an insight into the development of Sow Studio, its approach to both creative and commercial embroidery projects, and how its ongoing sampling and experimentation continue to shape the studio’s creative direction.
