The RSN Embroidery Studio has produced a series of 15 kits - one for each of the 15 decades since the founding of the Royal School of Needlework. The kit designs are taken from our archives and have been developed in a range of techniques and levels for embroiderers to enjoy and learn.

Discover the art of embroidered box making with this exquisite kit, inspired by the rich traditions and exceptional craftsmanship of the Royal School of Needlework (RSN).
Developed from techniques explored by RSN students in the late 2010s, this kit invites you to create your own elegant, fabric-covered box, adorned with a striking embroidered thistle motif. With embroidery instructions to guide you through the stitching, it offers a rewarding opportunity to combine the beauty of hand embroidery with the art of traditional box making.
The design also carries a special connection to the RSN’s creative heritage. The embroidered motif on the lid is taken from a piece created by the RSN Embroidery Studio for the 2022 Broderers’ Exhibition. Inspired by designs preserved in the RSN’s paper archives, the original work brought together historical influences, varied embroidery techniques and contemporary creative expression. Deliberately left partially embroidered, it celebrated the interplay between heritage and interpretation.
This distinctive kit brings that story to life, allowing you to recreate a motif from the original exhibition piece and transform it into a beautiful object of your own.

This kit contains: Printed linen fabric to embroider (box lid), linen fabric (outer box), printed cotton fabric (inner box), embroidery needles, DMC stranded cotton, Gutterman sew all, buttonhole thread, wool felt for padding, acid-free cardboard for box making, instruction book
