Course Description

Inspired by Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style at The King’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace

This is an exclusive RSN/Royal Collection Trust Experience Class to be held at The King's Gallery, Buckingham Palace on Thursday the 1st of October 2026

By popular demand we invite you to join us for another RSN Experience class in partnership with Royal Collection Trust to embroider a stunning beadwork design inspired by Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style at The King’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace until 18 April 2027. Your day will begin with a highlights tour of the show and a focus on Queen Elizabeth II’s wedding dress with Surveyor of The King’s Works of Art and exhibition curator, Caroline de Guitaut.

Designed by Sir Norman Hartnell and unveiled to the world in 1947, the gown remains an enduring symbol of post‑war optimism, craftsmanship, and regal elegance. During the day you will learn how to stitch this stunning motif highlighting many of the beadwork and embroidery techniques visible on the wedding dress.

Hand embroidery techniques include:

• Beading over satin and tulle

• String padding + beading over

• Beaded stem stitch in the round

• Cut fabric and tulle insert

• Silk ribbon wrapped beads

All the stitches and techniques will be covered by the tuition and your kit materials will enable you to complete the design after the class. Please bring a pencil and paper if you'd like to make notes. You may also like to bring your own battery operated lights or magnifiers but please do not bring scissors as you will be able to borrow ring frames and scissors on the day.

Royal School of Needlework In-House Team

Our embroidery courses are taught by expert hand embroiderers who bring real industry experience into the classroom. All of our tutors have trained with the Royal School of Needlework through our specialist training programmes and many have worked professionally on live embroidery projects for high-profile clients including royalty, leading designers and well-known public figures. This means that when you take an RSN course, you are not only learning embroidery techniques to the high standards we are known for, but also getting a real insight into how these skills are used within a professional embroidery studio. Our tutors are friendly, approachable and genuinely passionate about sharing their skills and knowledge. Whether you are completely new to embroidery or have been stitching for years, they will support you throughout the course and create a welcoming environment that feels really special to be part of.

How to get to The King's Gallery:

Security:
On the day of your class please arrive at The King's Gallery by 09.45am to be met by Royal Collection Trust and RSN staff. On arrival, you and your belongings will be subject to airport-style security checks. Some items, such as large bags or backpacks, will have to be checked in and reclaimed at the end of the visit. Guidance regarding prohibited items can be found on the Royal Collection Trust website.

Refreshments and breaks:
Tea/coffee will be provided during a short break in the morning. Please bring a packed lunch and any drinks you may require during the day. We will have a lunch break at approximately 1pm-1.30pm.
