Lino Printing with Harriet Popham

Discover the process of lino printing in this creative one-day course, exploring how simple carved shapes can be transformed into colourful prints, repeating patterns and layered compositions.

You will learn how to carve safely and confidently using soft-cut lino before experimenting with ink pads to create a series of mini prints, individual stamps and tessellating tile patterns. You will explore how your designs can be repeated, rotated and combined to create different compositions, giving you plenty of opportunity to experiment throughout the day.

As the course progresses, you will move into more advanced approaches to colour and layering. You will learn how to create puzzle-piece prints using multiple colours and explore how motifs can be layered to produce overlapping areas of colour and more complex designs.

Working onto thick, smooth Winsor & Newton cartridge paper, you will have the opportunity to test different combinations and develop your own collection of prints as your confidence grows.

By the end of the course, you will have developed an understanding of the lino printing process, from carving and inking through to pattern, colour and composition, as well as a selection of prints to take home and plenty of ideas for continuing to experiment with the technique.
