Course Description

Inspired by the illuminated manuscripts of medieval Europe, this design draws on the flowers, creatures and figures that often appeared within richly decorated borders and margins, traditionally brought to life with gold leaf and vibrant painted colour.

You will learn how to recreate these details through embroidery, working with gold kid leather and beautiful silk threads on parchment-coloured linen. You will explore a combination of Silk Shading, Goldwork and surface stitches, learning how the different techniques can be layered and worked together to create colour, texture and intricate detail.

Throughout the course, you will develop your understanding of each technique and how materials can be combined to capture the rich, decorative quality of medieval illuminated manuscripts in stitch.

What you will need to bring

Your kit will include the instructions, threads, needles and fabric with the design already drawn on, ready for you to begin stitching.

You will need to provide:

A 10-inch embroidery hoop or equivalent-sized frame

A basic sewing kit, including embroidery scissors, thimble and pins

A laying tool, such as a Mellor

A ruler

A black fine-liner pen

A small pair of sharp-pointed paper scissors. An old pair of blunted embroidery scissors is also ideal for this.

Tutor Biography

Jess Ingram

Before coming to the Royal School of Needlework, Jessica worked as a Costume Assistant in the entertainment industry for several years. Jess has always had a passion for history and an interest in traditional crafts, particularly hand embroidery, and in 2017 joined the Future Tutors Programme at the RSN. She was honoured to receive the RSN Broderers’ Award for Top Student when she graduated in August 2020. Since graduating Jess has been teaching Online classes for the RSN, as well as working in the RSN Embroidery Studio. Where she was honoured to be part of the Studio team that worked on a number of items for the Coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla in 2023. Including The Kings Robe of State, The Queen’s Robe of Estate, the Anointing Screen, Chairs of State and the Stole Royal. Jess also undertakes private commissions working on anything from birth and wedding samplers to embroidered suit jackets and book covers.
