The Viola Hairpin with Pippa Haynes

Pippa Haynes is a contemporary embroidery artist and the founder of Lemon Pepper Studio, a studio dedicated to exploring the relationship between hand embroidery, sculpture, and the natural world. Working primarily in thread, Haynes creates intricate three-dimensional textile pieces inspired by flora, fungi, mosses, and the environment surrounding her rural Wiltshire studio. Her work examines the natural world taking everyday inspiration from gardens and woodlands turning it into thread sculptures. She transforms fleeting natural forms into tactile studies that celebrate fragility, impermanence, and the beauty of slow craft.Largely self-taught, Haynes developed her practice through experimentation and an intuitive approach to materials. Inspired by historic examples of Stumpwork embroidery she works with traditional techniques such as wiring, thread painting and three-dimensional stitches whilst also developing an individual working process. Drawing influence from botanical illustration, Dutch still life painting, Victorian specimen collections, and the rhythms of countryside life, her work sits between fine art, craft, and natural history. Rather than aiming for strict realism, she seeks to evoke the atmosphere and emotional resonance of the natural world — inviting viewers to pause, look closer, and reconnect with the small wonders that often passed unnoticed.
