Course Description

Bring your own imagery to the RSN and turn it into an original embroidered scene inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry. Over five days, you will work with our tutors to take your idea through the full process, from developing the initial design and preparing your fabric to transferring the image and beginning the embroidery.

Your starting point could be a place, person, journey, event or story. Working with your RSN Tutor, you will develop your imagery into a design that works for embroidery, thinking about composition, scale and how the different elements of your scene can be translated into stitch.

You will then prepare your fabric using a rolling frame, learning the traditional method of framing up and creating the correct tension for embroidery.

Before stitching begins, you will explore traditional methods of transferring a design onto fabric. You will learn Prick and Pounce and painting on, using these techniques to transfer your own drawing ready for embroidery.

From here, the focus moves to the stitches and techniques seen in the Bayeux Tapestry itself. You will explore its distinctive approach to line, filling and texture, including the laid and couched work so closely associated with the embroidery.

We will also introduce a selection of contemporary embroidery techniques that you can choose to bring into your piece. The aim is not to create a reproduction of the Bayeux Tapestry, but to use its techniques as the starting point for something of your own.

By the end of the five days, you will have taken an idea through the complete design and preparation process and begun stitching a completely individual Bayeux Tapestry inspired scene.

What you will need to bring

Everything you need to complete your embroidery will be provided as part of the course.

Please bring a selection of inspirational images, photographs or drawings to use as a starting point for your stitched scene. These can be in any form and drawn from whatever inspires you, whether that is a particular landscape, place, memory, colour palette or collection of details.

We also recommend bringing a notebook and pen to make notes throughout the day, along with any favourite embroidery equipment you like to use, such as your own embroidery scissors or needle threader.

You are also very welcome to bring your favourite mug for tea and coffee throughout the day.
