Course Description

Discover the Royal School of Needlework Archive through this beautiful embroidery course inspired by an original design by Walter Crane.

Taking Crane’s distinctive Oranges design as its starting point, this piece has been developed by the Royal School of Needlework to celebrate the colour, movement and natural forms within his work. Worked on a pale ground to reflect the appearance of Crane’s original design on paper, the embroidery brings the illustration to life through a combination of Silk Shading, Crewelwork and touches of Goldwork.

Throughout the course, you will explore how the same approach to colour and shading can create very different effects when worked in contrasting embroidery materials. The oranges are stitched using fine filament silk, allowing you to build rich colour, depth and dimension across their surface. Working closely with your RSN Tutor, you will learn how to carefully control your stitch direction as you work around the curved form of each orange, using changes in direction and colour to create the appearance of shape, light and shadow.

You will then move onto the leaves, exchanging the smooth sheen of filament silk for the softer texture of traditional crewel wool. Here you will explore a selection of stitches associated with Jacobean Crewelwork, creating a deliberate contrast in both texture and style between the leaves and fruit. Your tutor will guide you through how to handle the different threads and how your choice of material can completely change the appearance of an embroidered surface.

Finally, you will introduce a touch of Goldwork to the design using traditional metal threads. Pearl Purl and Passing Thread will be applied to create the delicate stems and details within the orange blossom. By combining filament silk, crewel wool and metal threads within one design, this course is a wonderful opportunity to explore three very different embroidery materials while developing your understanding of colour, texture and stitch direction.

Whether you choose to stitch this as an individual piece or explore all three designs within our Walter Crane-inspired collection, this course offers the opportunity to discover an important part of the RSN Archive while developing a beautiful combination of traditional and contemporary hand embroidery techniques.

What you will need to bring

For our online courses, we recommend setting yourself up in a comfortable workspace with plenty of good light and enough room for your embroidery equipment.

Have your favourite embroidery scissors and any embroidery tools you regularly use to hand, such as needle threaders. If your course takes place in the evening, we strongly recommend using a daylight lamp so you can see your stitches and colours clearly.

For larger designs, we recommend working on a slate frame or roller frame to help maintain an even tension and achieve the best results. For smaller designs, particularly those in our Introductory Collection, a smaller frame such as a seat frame is suitable.

All specialist materials required to complete your embroidery will be included in your course kit.
