Course Description

Discover the Royal School of Needlework Archive through our Crewelwork Embroidery course inspired by Walter Crane’s Iris.

One of three courses in our Walter Crane-inspired collection, this design has been developed by the Royal School of Needlework using Crane’s original artwork from the RSN Archive as its starting point. The embroidered piece has been designed to remain as true to the original artwork as possible, translating Crane’s distinctive use of colour, line and botanical detail into stitch. The design is worked onto a carefully selected silk ground, chosen to reflect the softly aged appearance of the original archive piece and provide a beautiful backdrop for the rich colours of the iris.

Throughout the course, you will predominantly work with traditional Crewelwork Embroidery wools, exploring how colour and stitch direction can be used to recreate the shapes and movement within Crane’s original design. You will learn Long and Short Stitch and work with your RSN Tutor to understand how stitches can be carefully placed and blended to build areas of colour across the petals and leaves.

The colours of the embroidery have been selected to closely reflect Crane’s original artwork, giving you the opportunity to explore how an historic design created on paper can be interpreted through traditional hand embroidery.

Alongside the Crewelwork, we have introduced small touches of contemporary Goldwork and hand beading to bring additional texture and detail to the finished piece. You will learn how to apply Pearl Purl, a traditional Goldwork thread, using it to highlight details within the centre of the leaves and introduce a subtle metallic finish. Pearlescent seed beads are then added by hand, creating another layer of texture and reflecting some of the delicate detailing found within the original artwork. The finished embroidery brings together the softness and texture of Crewelwork wool with the shine of metal thread and delicate pearlescent beading.

Whether you choose to stitch the Iris as an individual piece or explore all three designs within our Walter Crane-inspired collection, this course offers the opportunity to discover an important part of the RSN Archive while developing a beautiful combination of traditional and contemporary hand embroidery techniques.

What you will need to bring

For our online courses, we recommend setting yourself up in a comfortable workspace with plenty of good light and enough room for your embroidery equipment.

Have your favourite embroidery scissors and any embroidery tools you regularly use to hand, such as needle threaders. If your course takes place in the evening, we strongly recommend using a daylight lamp so you can see your stitches and colours clearly.

Please make sure your fabric is framed up and ready to stitch before the first session. For larger designs, we recommend working on a slate frame or roller frame to help maintain an even tension and achieve the best results. For smaller designs, particularly those in our Introductory Collection, a smaller frame such as a seat frame is suitable.

All specialist materials required to complete your embroidery will be included in your course kit.
