Course Description

Explore the exquisite combination of traditional Goldwork and couture beading in this intricate hands-on embroidery workshop, inspired by the Fabergé Winter Egg designed by Alma Pihl.

Working on delicate, transparent organza, you will create an elegant embroidered design combining traditional Goldwork elements with contemporary couture beading techniques and materials. The course offers an opportunity to explore the contrast between the richness of metallic threads, leather and sparkling crystals and the delicacy of the organza ground.

Throughout the workshop, you will learn how to apply leather and stitch a selection of traditional Goldwork materials, including silver pearl purl, silver chipping and cutwork. These techniques will be demonstrated using both traditional and contemporary approaches, allowing you to develop an understanding of how different materials can be combined to create texture, surface and embellishment.

You will also have the opportunity to explore a range of couture beading techniques, including tambour beading and the application of crystals. Working with these finer materials on transparent organza introduces an additional level of technical challenge, encouraging you to consider the placement, construction and finish of every stitch.

Although the embroidery is delicate and intricate, the individual techniques are accessible. The course focuses on repetition, consistency and accuracy, helping you refine your stitching and develop greater control when working with fine materials.

By the end of the course, you will have created your own piece of Goldwork and couture beaded embroidery on organza, while developing techniques that can be applied to future embroidery, fashion and decorative projects.

This course is particularly suited to intermediate stitchers looking to take their embroidery to the next level and gain confidence working with fine, transparent fabrics and embellishment techniques.

What you will need to bring

For this online course, you will need to provide a 10-inch ring frame or a small slate or roller frame to work your embroidery. If using a slate or roller frame, please make sure your fabric is framed up and ready to stitch before the first session.
The beadwork within the design can be worked using either a needle or a Tambour hook. If you would like to learn the Tambour technique as part of the course, you will need to provide your own Tambour hook.
We recommend setting yourself up in a comfortable workspace with plenty of good light and enough room for your embroidery equipment. Please have your usual sewing kit to hand, including your favourite embroidery scissors, needles, thimble and needle threader if you use one. If your course takes place in the evening, we strongly recommend using a daylight lamp so you can see your stitches and materials clearly.
All specialist materials required to complete your embroidery will be included in your course kit.

Tutor Biography

Auburn Lucas

Auburn is an accomplished hand embroiderer, teacher and published author with a passion for creating individual and thought-provoking work, while sharing her expertise through teaching.

Over the past 12 years, Auburn has studied, practised and refined a wide range of traditional embroidery techniques, which she incorporates into both her teaching and personal practice. Much of her work is inspired by historical fashion and textiles, reflecting her original training in this area.

More recently, sustainability has become an increasingly important part of Auburn’s practice. She enjoys combining traditional embroidery techniques in unexpected ways, reimagining stitches and exploring how they can be used to create new styles, textures and effects.

Auburn is currently developing a series of works focused on the natural world and the environmental crisis, exploring naturally recyclable and biodegradable materials alongside threads and materials found in or created from nature.
