Course Description
Spend two days at the Royal School of Needlework learning the specialist techniques of Tambour Embroidery, hand beading and Goldwork, brought together in a contemporary stork design. Inspired by the stork-shaped embroidery scissors that have become such a recognisable part of an embroiderer’s workbox, this design takes the familiar shape of the bird and reimagines it through couture and traditional hand embroidery techniques.
Over the two days, you will build the embroidery from the ground up, starting with Tambour Chain Stitch. Your RSN Tutor will show you how to hold and control the Tambour hook, create an even line of stitching and follow the curves and details within the design.
You will then begin to embellish the stork, learning different ways of applying beads and embellishments using both a Tambour hook and a traditional embroidery needle. Working with the two methods side by side will give you an understanding of how each technique works and when you might choose to use one over the other.
Goldwork is introduced through Pearl Purl, which is applied to outline selected areas of the design. The metal thread brings definition and a clean metallic finish to the stork, sitting alongside the softer stitched and beaded areas.
Throughout the course, you will also learn the starting and finishing methods used within couture embroidery. Rather than securing threads with knots, you will learn how to start and finish your threads cleanly, leaving no knots on either the front or back of the fabric.
With two full days to work on the piece, you will have time to get comfortable with the Tambour hook, develop your control and work closely with your tutor as you move through the different techniques.
The finished piece brings together Tambour Chain Stitch, hand beading and Goldwork, giving you a strong introduction to three specialist embroidery techniques and the skills to begin using them within your own work.
