Course Description

Discover the beautiful embroidery technique of Opus Anglicanum, a highly skilled form of English embroidery that flourished between the 12th and 14th centuries and became renowned for its intricate work in silk and metal threads.

You will learn several of the core techniques associated with Opus Anglicanum, including Underside Couching and Split Stitch, exploring how these historic methods were used to create richly detailed embroidery.

The design is inspired by the delicately embroidered figures often found on medieval church vestments, depicting saints, monarchs and biblical stories. Working with silk and metal threads, you will learn how these traditional techniques can be combined to build detail, texture and character within the design.

Throughout the course, you will develop an understanding of the materials and methods that define Opus Anglicanum while creating your own piece inspired by this remarkable period of English embroidery.

What you will need to bring

Your kit will include the instructions, threads, needles and fabric with the design already drawn on, ready for you to begin stitching.

You will need to bring:

A 10-inch embroidery hoop or equivalent-sized frame

A basic sewing kit, including embroidery scissors, thimble and pins

A laying tool, such as a Mellor

Embroiderer’s beeswax

A ruler

A black fine-liner pen or hard pencil (H or HB)

A notepad and pen if you would like to take notes during the course

Tutor Biography

Jess Ingram

Before coming to the Royal School of Needlework, Jessica worked as a Costume Assistant in the entertainment industry for several years. Jess has always had a passion for history and an interest in traditional crafts, particularly hand embroidery, and in 2017 joined the Future Tutors Programme at the RSN. She was honoured to receive the RSN Broderers’ Award for Top Student when she graduated in August 2020. Since graduating Jess has been teaching Online classes for the RSN, as well as working in the RSN Embroidery Studio. Where she was honoured to be part of the Studio team that worked on a number of items for the Coronation of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla in 2023. Including The Kings Robe of State, The Queen’s Robe of Estate, the Anointing Screen, Chairs of State and the Stole Royal. Jess also undertakes private commissions working on anything from birth and wedding samplers to embroidered suit jackets and book covers.
