Course Description
Dive into the world of Couture Embroidery with this immersive ten-week course inspired by the colours, textures and forms found beneath the sea.
Designed as an opportunity to explore a wide range of couture embroidery techniques within one richly embellished piece, this course will take you through every stage of creating your embroidery from the initial design transfer and fabric preparation through to the final finishing details.
Over ten weeks, you will gradually build your underwater scene alongside our expert RSN Tutors, learning how different materials and techniques can be layered together to create texture, movement and depth. You will explore both hand beading and Tambour Beading, learning different approaches to applying beads and embellishments to your fabric.
A key focus of the course will be learning how to take embroidery beyond a flat surface. You will create three-dimensional elements using prepared cut-outs and appliqué techniques, building individual components before bringing them together within the final composition. Different areas of the embroidery will sit at varying heights from the fabric, creating a truly three-dimensional sample that changes as you view it from different angles.
Throughout the course, you will work with a wide range of threads, beads, metal threads and fabrics, exploring how each material can be used to create a different visual and tactile texture. Your tutors will guide you through how to balance these materials within the overall design and how to build detail without losing the shape and movement of the piece.
The extended ten-week format gives you time to develop each technique, refine your skills with support from your tutor and see your underwater scene gradually come to life.
By the end of the course, you will have created a highly embellished three-dimensional Couture Embroidery piece while developing a broad range of specialist techniques that can be taken forward and used within your own future embroidery projects.
