Course Description
Spend three days at the Royal School of Needlework exploring the specialist techniques of Goldwork Embroidery through an intricate butterfly design. Working with a combination of metallic threads, raised embroidery and appliqué, you will build the butterfly layer by layer while learning how different Goldwork materials catch and reflect the light.
You will begin by creating the foundation of the butterfly wings using gold fabric appliqué. This provides a rich metallic background to the design and introduces you to working with applied fabrics alongside traditional Goldwork techniques.
From here, you will begin to build the raised centre of the butterfly. Your RSN Tutor will show you how to create shape and dimension using Soft String Padding, gradually building the foundation before covering it with Gold Smooth Purl worked in Cutwork. You will learn how to cut and apply the purl accurately to create a smooth, structured finish over the padded form.
Goldwork is particularly prized for the way its metallic surfaces interact with light, and throughout the course you will work with materials and techniques that create different levels of shine, texture and reflection across the butterfly.
You will learn traditional Goldwork outlining techniques using Pearl Purl, couching the metal thread around selected areas to create clean, defined edges. Alongside this, you will explore filling techniques including Chipping, using small pieces of metal purl to introduce areas of texture and sparkle within the wings.
Working across three days gives you time to develop your control of the different materials and understand how the techniques work together. Your tutor will guide you through preparing, handling and applying the specialist Goldwork threads, as well as the methods used to achieve a precise finish.
The finished butterfly brings together gold fabric appliqué, Soft String Padding, Cutwork, Pearl Purl and Chipping, giving you the opportunity to explore a range of Goldwork techniques within one design while discovering how contrasting metallic surfaces can be used to play with light, texture and dimension.
