Course Description
Explore the relationship between silk painting and embroidery in this three-week online course, creating a beautiful peony that moves from softly painted colour into couture embellishment.

The first two weeks of the course are taught by textile designer Charlotte Krone and focus on building the peony through silk painting. Charlotte will introduce you to the process of painting directly onto silk, showing you how to control the colour as it moves across the fabric and create the soft tonal changes within each petal.

Working from deeper shades at the centre of the flower into lighter tones towards the edges, you will learn how to gradually build and blend colour to give the peony depth and form. Charlotte will take you through the painting process step by step, giving you time to understand how the paint behaves on silk and how subtle changes in colour can create the impression of overlapping, dimensional petals.

In the final week, one of our RSN Tutors will introduce couture beading techniques to bring the painted flower to life. Rather than covering the silk painting, the embroidery is designed to work with it, adding carefully placed beads and embellishments that catch the light and draw attention to selected areas of the flower.

You will learn how to apply beads cleanly and securely, considering their placement and how they interact with the painted surface beneath.

The finished piece brings together two very different approaches to textile design. The softness and fluidity of Charlotte’s silk painting is combined with the texture and light of couture beading, creating a layered peony in which paint and embroidery work together as one design.

Please note: The imagery used to promote this course shows a partially worked piece to give an example of possible bead placement. The beading element of the course will be creative and experimental, allowing you to choose where and how you add embellishment to your own peony.

What you will need to bring

For this online course, you will need to provide the following equipment and materials:

Slate frame, embroidery hoop or other suitable embroidery frame
Gouache paints – please include magenta if possible
Water and a water pot
Palette or plate for mixing colours
Tissues

Please make sure your fabric is framed up and ready to work on before the first session.

We recommend setting yourself up in a comfortable workspace with plenty of good light and enough room for your materials and embroidery equipment. Have your favourite embroidery scissors and any tools you regularly use, such as needle threaders, to hand. If your course takes place in the evening, we strongly recommend using a daylight lamp.

For larger designs, we recommend working on a slate frame or roller frame to help maintain an even tension and achieve the best results.

Tutor Biography

Charlotte Krone & Royal School of Needlework Tutors

Your course will be taught by textile designer Charlotte Krone alongside expert Royal School of Needlework Tutors, bringing together silk painting, surface design and specialist hand beading. Charlotte is the Creative Director of http://www.rediscoveredby.com (@charlottekrone_studio), an independent textile and wallpaper studio specialising in the research, revival and contemporary reinterpretation of historical textile techniques. Trained in Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University of London, with further study at the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia, her practice is rooted in material exploration, historical research and traditional craft. Working across print, embroidery, weaving and surface design, Charlotte draws inspiration from museum collections, historic archives and the natural world. During the course, Charlotte will teach you how to create the silk-painted foundation for the design, introducing her approach to colour, composition and working directly onto silk. Once the painted base has been created, your Royal School of Needlework Tutors will guide you through the hand beading elements of the design. All of our tutors have trained through the RSN’s specialist training programmes and bring professional embroidery experience into the classroom. You will learn how to build texture and detail over the painted surface using specialist hand beading and embellishment techniques, combining the two processes to create a layered textile piece. Charlotte has collaborated with heritage organisations and specialist makers including Gainsborough Weaving, Burghley House and Knots Rugs. Her work has also been featured in Homes & Gardens, The World of Interiors, Period Living, Tatler, Country Living and The Times.
