Gold and Silk Shaded Flower inspired by an 18th century embroidered dress at Mapperton House

Join us for an RSN Experience Class at the magnificent Mapperton House in Dorset, home to the Earl and Countess of Sandwich, and learn how to stitch this exquisite Gold and Silk Shaded flower, inspired by a historical textile from The Earl of Sandwich Collection.  This event will include a highlights tour of the House and a chance to meet its current owner, Countess Julie Montagu (American Countess ), who will show you the beautiful apron dress and embroidery that  inspired the class. The 18th century garment is heavily decorated in floral motifs with this design being only one of the many motifs found on this amazingly well preserved gem. Stitched on a cream silk background with heart shaped flowers, this embroidery would have really sparkled and shone when worn. During the class, RSN Tutor, Deborah Wilding will teach you hand embroidery techniques including, string padding, surface couching, application of metal chips, long and short shading, padded satin stitch and french knots. This class is suitable for stitchers of all levels with all the basics covered to create your own sample. A full instruction booklet will be included in the kit to enable you to complete the design at home. The class cost includes all materials and necessary equipment.

You may like to bring your own embroidery scissors and battery operated magnifiers if you need them, but you will be able to borrow ring frames and scissors on the day. The event will be truly exclusive as the House and Gardens are closed to the public on Fridays. Mapperton was entered in the Domesday Book 1086 as Mapertone. It was then the property of William de Moion, Sheriff of Somerset. From then on Mapperton belonged to only four families linked by descent in the female line until it was bought in 1919 by Mrs Ethel Labouchere. Since her death in 1955 it has been the home of the family of the Earl of Sandwich. The 18th century apron is part of the Earl of Sandwich Collection which also includes paintings by Lely, Van de Velde the Younger, Scott, Reynolds and Hogarth. Joining Instructions: Registration commences at 9.45am and your class will take place in the Coach House. You will be treated to teas, coffees and biscuits after your tour of Mapperton House. Food and drink (other than bottled water) may not be consumed  in the workshop space, but please bring a packed lunch to eat in a separate area or in Mapperton Gardens. Mapperton is fully accessible and there is a car park on site.
