Course Description

Explore a contemporary approach to Goldwork and Beading in this eight-week online embroidery course, creating an embellished koi carp swimming through a pond of three-dimensional lotus flowers and lily pads.

Inspired by couture embroidery and the possibilities of taking stitch beyond the surface of the fabric, this course focuses on how traditional embroidery materials and techniques can be used to create texture, movement and relief. Over eight weeks, you will gradually build your scene alongside our expert RSN Tutors, learning how individual embroidered elements can be layered, shaped and lifted away from the fabric.

The koi carp forms the centre of the design, combining Goldwork, appliqué and beading to create contrasting surfaces and textures. You will learn how to individually apply cupped sequins to create overlapping scales across the body of the fish, building movement as they catch the light. Goldwork details will be introduced throughout, alongside leather appliqué on the head of the koi to create a smooth surface that contrasts with the highly embellished body.

Surrounding the koi, you will create a collection of lotus flowers and lily pads, learning how three-dimensional embroidered elements begin as individual flat shapes. Working on each component separately, your tutor will guide you through a range of embroidery and Goldwork techniques before showing you how to construct, shape and curl the finished elements. The lotus petals will lift away from the ground fabric, creating different levels of relief and giving the impression of flowers sitting above the surface of the pond. Throughout the course, you will explore how different materials behave and how they can be combined to create varying heights, textures and finishes within one embroidery.

To bring the composition together, you will add delicate free-stitched detailing in gold thread to suggest ripples moving through the water. These subtle metallic lines create a sense of movement around the koi, lotus flowers and lily pads while balancing the more heavily embellished areas of the design.

By the end of this eight-week online course, you will have created a highly detailed contemporary Goldwork and Beading piece with multiple levels of texture and relief, while developing a range of couture-inspired techniques that can be applied to your own embroidery projects.

What you will need to bring

For our online courses, we recommend setting yourself up in a comfortable workspace with plenty of good light and enough room for your embroidery equipment.

Have your favourite embroidery scissors and any embroidery tools you regularly use to hand, such as needle threaders. If your course takes place in the evening, we strongly recommend using a daylight lamp so you can see your stitches and colours clearly.

Please make sure your fabric is framed up and ready to stitch before the first session. For larger designs, we recommend working on a slate frame or roller frame to help maintain an even tension and achieve the best results. For smaller designs, particularly those in our Introductory Collection, a smaller frame such as a seat frame is suitable.

All specialist materials required to complete your embroidery will be included in your course kit.
