Course Description
Spend two days at the Royal School of Needlework getting to grips with Tambour Embroidery and discovering just how versatile the Tambour hook can be. With a full weekend dedicated to the technique, this course gives you the time to understand the fundamentals, practise each process and develop confidence and control with the hook.
You will begin with Tambour Chain Stitch, also known as Beauvais Stitch, learning how to hold and control the Tambour hook and create a consistent line of stitching. Your RSN Tutor will guide you through the movement of the hook and fabric, helping you develop the rhythm and coordination that sit at the heart of the technique.
Once you are comfortable creating Chain Stitch, you will explore how the same hook can be used to apply beads and embellishments. You will learn to work from the top of the fabric, giving you greater visibility and control over the placement of individual beads, before exploring the traditional couture method of Tambour Beading worked from the reverse of the fabric.
Working with both methods will give you a greater understanding of the versatility of the Tambour hook and how the technique can be adapted depending on the effect you want to achieve.
Across the two days, you will have plenty of time to practise each technique with the support of your tutor, refine the movement of the hook and work through any areas you find challenging. Rather than rushing through the processes, the course is designed to give you the time to repeat and develop each skill until the movements begin to feel natural.
By the end of the course, you will have explored Tambour Chain Stitch and beading from both the front and reverse of the fabric, giving you a strong foundation in Tambour Embroidery and the confidence to continue developing the technique within your own embroidery.
