Canterbury Robin Inspired by the James I Charter Class at Canterbury Cathedral

Join us at Canterbury Cathedral to embroider a new and exclusive robin motif inspired by the original James I Charter issued in 1608. The event will include a rare opportunity to view the stunning document which is not on public display.

With plump woven wheel berries and his fluffy chenille tummy, Mr Robin is all set to enjoy the festive season. Designed by RSN Tutor, Kathryn Sanders, this class is suitable for embroiderers of all levels.

During the day Kathryn will show you how to create your robin using variations of 5 stitches: satin stitch, stem stitch, couching, burden filling and woven wheels. Not only will you be guided through each of the stitches, but you will also learn ways to incorporate some simple shading.

All aspects of the motif will be covered during the class and a full instruction booklet will be included in the kit to enable you to complete the embroidery at home.

After the morning session, you will visit the Cathedral Archives and Library to view, under the guidance of the Cathedral Archivist, the original James I Charter. The beautiful illuminated document was issued to the city of Canterbury in 1608 by James I granting various rights and permissions. It is the property of the city but it is kept in the Archives of Canterbury Cathedral.

The city-wide Canterbury Christmas Market will also be open, featuring festive stalls selling gifts, food and drink, plus special events, and a carousel in the Cathedral Precincts.

The class cost includes all materials and necessary equipment and your kit comprises everything you require to complete the project. You may like to bring your own embroidery scissors and magnifiers if you need them, but you will be able to borrow ring frames and scissors on the day.

RSN and The Friends of Canterbury Cathedral have a long history of collaboration. In 1935 Dr E W Tristam designed a fabulous Friends of Canterbury Cathedral banner which was embroidered by the Royal School of Needlework.

Joining Instructions:

Registration commences at 9.45am and please meet the Shepherds at the Christ Church Gate or the Welcome Centre who will guide you to the Community Studio overlooking the main entrance to the Cathedral.

Complimentary coffee and tea will be served on arrival, but please note that in general, food and drink (other than bottled water) may not be consumed  in the classroom. Please bring a packed lunch to eat in a designated space or you might like to visit the Cathedral Lodge Lounge. The Lounge Bar offers a full light lunch and beverage menu, served between 10am-4pm daily.

Blue Badge Parking: there is limited parking on site and this must be booked in advance with friends@canterbury-cathedral.org but cannot be guaranteed.
